Trip Preparation for Secondary Schools

Outdoor Program Sessions in Environmental Education

How to Prepare for the Trip:

Note: the terrain is extremely rugged.
 

  • Ensure that all students, teachers and volunteers are properly attired for the outdoor program.

  • All participants need to bring a lunch.

  • Students will be working in small groups of 5 to 6 students.

  •  Please photocopy the necessary worksheets for your class.

  • A sample self-directed student activity is included in this format for you to print out for your class.

  • All on-site program equipment and materials are supplied.

  • Raincoats are available for students as required.  

  • Students may be photographed when participating in the programs, please ensure that the necessary consent forms are completed ahead of time for your class.  

General Outline for the Day:

  • Program instructors will meet the bus in the main parking lot.

  • The instructors will lead the classes to the Trail Centre to outline the day.

  • At the Trail Centre, one class will begin the Outdoor Program Session  with the on site instructor.

  • The other class, led by the classroom teacher will be given a brief introduction to the area  and will  be responsible for their own activity.

  •  Lunch will be approximately 30 minutes

  • After lunch the group that participated in the Outdoor Program Session  will switch activities with the other class.  They will be given a brief introduction to the area and will then be responsible for their own activity.

  • The other group will then participate in the Outdoor Program Session as led by the site instructor.

  • At the end of the day teachers may be asked to complete and hand in an evaluation of their day.

  • Please remember that the full amount of this outdoor environmental education experience was paid through grants received by the Conservation Authority.  Teachers and students are encouraged to write to the program sponsor in order to thank them.  Future programs rely on your letters of appreciation.
