The under
story beneath the canopy is inhabited by the Black-Capped
Chickadee. They are lively acrobatic birds capable of
hanging upside down in their busy search for food.
Although this year-round inhabitant may spend a lot of
time in your birdfeeder during the winter, it’s
natural diet consists largely of insect eggs in the
winter, and a variety of insects including caterpillars,
moths, spiders, beetles, flies, wasps, true bugs, etc. in
warmer weather. An inhabitant of both deciduous and
coniferous forests this bird nests in holes they excavate
in the rotting wood of dead trees 1-3 metres above the
ground. The bottoms of these cavities are lined with
wool, hair, fur, feathers, etc.
